Facebook announces new Internet-wide social features

Facebooksmall

Not our typical news for the Bangkokrecorder, but considering how important facebook has become to the most of us it is nevertheless interesting to see what is coming next... At the f8 conference that just started in the US, Facebook started with a keynote that layed out its plans for world/Internet domination... well at least it sounds like it. The article is taken from the Boy Genius Report:

Facebook kicked off the f8 conference with a keynote that laid out its plans to integrate the web into Facebook and Facebook into the web. The social networking powerhouse began by re-affirming its commitment to the unified login provided by Facebook Connect, and revoked the previous limitation that required Facebook Connect-enabled websites to delete cached user data within 24 hours. From today forward, Facebook Connect websites can store user data to create a seamless browsing experience that is enhanced by a single, persistent login. Facebook then presented its expanded Open Graph concept, introduced a series of new social plugins for websites, and unveiled the  new Graph API, an improved and expanded core framework for developers. Read about Facebook’s plan to literally own the web after the jump.

Here are some the tools and concepts presented today that will enable Facebook to expand beyond the bounds of its domain and and reach out to the rest of the web.

Open Graph

Introduced at the first f8, Open Graph is a paradigm shift that puts you and your Facebook profile at the center of the Internet.

Official Twitter App for BlackBerry is here

Capture13_26_54

It took a while but finally RIM has released its official BlackBerry Twitter App. I have tested it for about 30 minutes so far and like what I see. Seems to be much more stable and faster than the Facebook App for example that I hope will see an update soon. You can download the app here:

Facebook could see "Foursquare" like location updates of your friends as early as April

Facebook_pic

As early as next month Facebook could be rolling out its new "location" based updates. Services lik Foursquare (www.foursquare.com) or Gowalla (http://gowalla.com/) have seen a big rise in interest.

In Thailand, with the recent gain in popularity of iPhones and Blackberrys, Foursquare has a decent amount of people using the service here. It is not a "US only" thing anymore.

So it make smore than sense that Facebok will introduce its own version of "checking in" or basically revealing your location to your friends. It will probably be integrated into the status updates and I bet it will be by choice just as with Foursquare. You will not be required to tell anybody where you are but can do so at will.

With 400 Million users, even if only a small percentage starts using tis service, Facebook could easily steal the crown frm the current leader in this area which is Foursquare.

First screenshot of upcoming native Blackberry Twitter App

Blackberry_twitter

BlackBerry crazy Thailand is always a bit behind when it comes to updates such as the imminent upgrade to BIS 3.0 which will happen in North America first. But with the official RIM Twitter App which is still in beta stage, this should not be the case. Some people expect it make most other Twitter apps for BB unnecessary but if early beta reviews are any indication of what will come than RIM will have a long way to go before it can catch up to others. Biggest complaint was that there is "nothing that other Twitter apps for BlackBerry not do already". Let's see how it goes. It is said that a release of this app is imminent. For me....I would like to suggest that RIM fixes their facebook app's many bugs first before releasing this!
