Typhoon spares Shanghai

Wednesday, 19 September 2007
Typhoon Wipha forced the evacuation of more than 2 million along China's eastern coast, but has not caused as much damage as forecasters had feared.

Winds of 45 metres per second hit Cangan county, as Zhejiang province was warned that it could be the most destructive typhoon in a decade to hit the area.

The local government said at least 669 houses were destroyed in Cangan, while power supplies were disrupted to 1,867 villages, and some 5 million people were affected.
