Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has ordered a feasibility study on installation of a natural disaster early warning system for Northern Thailand, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop said on Friday.
Thaksin's instruction comes as heavy floods take their toll on a wide range of areas covering the five northern provinces of Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Lampang, Phrae, and Nan. Dozens have been confirmed killed and almost 70 are still missing.
Suwat was quoted as saying that the North needs a wider scope warning system regarding natural disasters than the south, where tsunami warning sirens were installed, because it covers a much wider area.
