Rising numbers of elderly citizens, a decline in young people and working populace and a falling fertility rate mean that Thailand is headed for a population crisis, a scholar warned yesterday. Kua Wongboonsin, a population studies expert from Chulalongkorn University, said fertility rates had fallen from 6.3 in 1964 to 1.61 in 2005 and needed immediate attention. With each family now having less than two children, he said that Thailand now has the highest projected percentage of elderly in 2010.
