Thailand sues YouTube
Friday, 04 May 2007
YouTube.com faces a lawsuit from Thailand's Information and Communications Technology Ministry for not removing an offensive video clip of His Majesty the King.

Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom said Google, which owns YouTube, had agreed to requests from China to censor some clips, and could not see why the website could not do the same for Thailand.

"This YouTube issue is about a private firm in the US trying to bully a small country like Thailand," Mr Sitthichai said.

YouTube.com remains banned in Thailand.

funny: the whole world accuses Google and Yahoo for accepting compromises with some "evil" governments such as China, thus indirectly accepting the use of censorship and accepting to be bullied by undemocratic, authoritarian governments. Thailand, on the other hand, complains that Google shows a discriminatory attitude because it doesn't let the Thai government be as undemocratic and authoritarian as it wishes to be. Wow, what a great achievement for Thailand and its society.
One more thing: what is the point of censoring porn websites in the land of prostitution? My idea is that they fear that some people would feel relieved by just looking at some pics of naked women and might abandon the idea of going to a brothel, for a change. What a great loss for the sex industry. What a great loss for who's investing in it...

Youtube is discriminatory.

"Analysts say there are several ways in which Youtube could be adapted for international markets. The company could, like the Google search engine, create local-language sites, denoted with separate suffixes like .fr for France or.cn for China.

Or the company can use the process called geographical zoning."
