Thailand safe from Tsunami

Friday, 14 September 2007
There is no threat of a tsunami striking Thailand’s waters following Wednesday’s earthquake on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, according to Chairman of the National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC), Smith Dharmasaroja.

"I give you 100 percent reassurance that Thailand will not experience a tsunami," he said, "but should another earthquake occur somewhere else, I can’t guarantee what will happen."

"The National Disaster Warning Centre can send out a warning to the six southern coastal provinces about one to one and a half hours in advance should a tsunami triggered by an earthquake in Sumatra island approach," he said.

"If there was an earthquake around the Nicobar island, the warning can be issued 45 minutes in advance."
