King Bhumibol Adulyadej is recovering well after spinal surgery on Thursday, announced the Royal Household Bureau.
The King had been diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis and underwent a three-hour operation at Siriraj Hospital. The team of royal doctors said the operation went without hitch. HM the King has been moved from the intensive care unit and is now recovering in a private room.
Throngs of people have been flocking to the hospital and temples around Thailand to pay respect to the King by writing get well messages and donating alms to Buddhist monks.
Well-wishers as well as hospital staff have donned yellow t-shirts to commemorate the colour that represents day the King was born.
The king’s condition was diagnosed three years ago and initially treated with physical therapy. However, the monarch continued to experience problems walking with his right leg.
His surgery was postponed until the end of celebrations for his 60th anniversary of his coronation, making King Bhumibol the longest reigning monarch in the world.
