Playground! & Manga will Close

Wednesday, 12 December 2007
The two concept stores Playground! on Thonglor and MANGA, located at the ground floor of the new Central World, are about to close it doors beginning of 2008. It’s a big failure for Noble, the condo/home developer, who tried to expand into retail and a sad day for the few sophisticated shoppers that were able to afford shopping at those cool stores.

i visit bkk few times a year and i loved to go to playground to find some interesting things like shoes, clothes, even stationery or enjoy a coffee there! I can found the same brands in HK but totally different styles and items (more nicer in PG!!) so I prefer shop at PG! I'm heading to Bkk this weekend, can anybody tell if it's still open??

Noble Gesture

It was kinda cool and ludicrously positioned market wise...but some (wannabe) rich kid marketing fool took for granted that Noble were dealing with Bimboland and we would all turn up and make their lifestyle marketing fantasy come true...the restaurants were plastic, the people were plastic and the goods on sale much more fun to shop for at Siam or Paragon...it was halfway there in some respects...the site should be used as a Covent Garden type place with music, cool one-man boutiques, coffee - split up like a designer's mini MBK and cool to hang -not like a 'coffee table warehouse' which of course nobody wants to visit - a museum-like atmosphere don't work man! Travel more...see how the real world works!

Playground! ain't that hip..

I expected a lot more out of the Playground! store. It appeared to me just another try-to-be-arty store in Bangkok. Most of the items there can be found somewhere else (with 20% cheaper price tags).

That's why it is out of business.

fucked up

thats pretty f**ked up. the two best stores in bkk close... so bkk is now just back to pbb (party, beer & b!tches)

way too overpriced

Basically, I think it was a bad idea to open it in the first place. Concept stores work well in places like Japan. The store seems to target artists & designers. Although most people might argue that it was targeting hi so kids, how many hi so kids actually have such edgy avant garde taste. Very minimal in thailand. The management failed to see that the average salary for the arts oriented community varies from 10-25k. Why spend 20k on a supposedly fabolous ultra cool pair of jeans when you can get it tailor made and custom designed by your friend or yourself for 1000 baht?

It's a pity

It's a pity to see them having to pack their bags. The stuffs are quite interesting & unique.

what they needed to do was support up and coming thai designers with prices people could affrd to buy...things were way too expensive for me to purchase anything....still a little sad to see them go.

Good to walk in...

But I never saw anyone at the registers buying anything. It was way over-hyped from the beginning. I still like it for some reason though, maybe it's the open space in there, it "feels" cool. I'm very interested to know what's going to end up there.

Whoa!

Didn't see that coming, honestly.

Then again, I only knew of both stores by reputation -- I'm based in Manila, so I'd never been there, first hand. I had no idea the prices were so jacked up.

Still, I hope the stores remain open at least until New Year's ever or so -- my girlfriend Claire and I will be visiting BKK at the end of the month. Who knows? We might just luck out, if they start marking goodies down to cost price, hehehe.

uh yeah

Definitely a store I didn't mind visiting from time to time but could never convince myself to buy anything beyond a CD or mag. I would imagine the people that could afford such prices are just as capable of flying to Hong Kong for a shopping weekend and at better prices.

I imagine a number of IKEA items are made in Thailand so ouch on the markup.

Duh

Even at 50%-70% closing sales they have now, the stuff is still not clearing out.

How do you buy a clue here?

yes, playground was nice, i liked it and even manga had some nice stuff BUT yes at least Manga was overpriced. tshirts for 10000 Baht? Jeans for 15000 Baht??

the places had some nice stuff... but the stuff was waaaaay overpriced (Ikea furniture with a 600% mark up??? Japanese denim with a 400% mark up?!?!?!). The stores looked nice but they were doomed from the beginning... the pet project of some rich kids, no doubt.
