Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra resigned live on television yesterday, keeping a promise made before Sunday's election that he would resign if his party wins less than 50 percent of votes.
"I'm retreating and not accepting the post of prime minister... We have no time to quarrel... I want to see Thai people unite and forget what has happened," said Thaksin before turning teary-eyed to be consoled by his family.

A quarterly Thai political magazine has been ordered to stop distribution of their Oct-Dec 2005 issue after receiving a notice from the Interior Ministry, the Bangkok Post reported.
Publisher and editor of Fah Diew Kan (Under the Same Sky), Thanapol Eawsakul, received a directive signed by national police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana on Thursday banning him from disseminating the magazine and stating police will seize existing copies.

Thailand gears up for the snap election today, from which the fate of embattled Thai Rak Thai (TRT) administration will be decided. The elections come three years ahead of scehdule after protests called to oust Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra after his family's tax-free sale of Shin Corp to Singapore's Temasek Holdings.

A United Nations report has condemned Thailand for its lack of female representation in government positions.
The report, Women's Right to a Political Voice in Thailand, revealed that women only occupied 10 percent of seats in parliament, one out of 36 Cabinet ministerial posts and one out of 76 provincial governor positions.
