Thousands of Hmong minorities claiming to be from Laos are to be deported to their home country after seeking shelter in crude lodgings in Ban Huay Nam Khao Village, Petchabun province in Thailand's north. Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra ordered the Internal Security Operations Command to "quickly solve the problem" of 4,500 displaced Hmong people, even though their return could mean persecution.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej is recovering well after spinal surgery on Thursday, announced the Royal Household Bureau. The King had been diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis and underwent a three-hour operation at Siriraj Hospital. The team of royal doctors said the operation went without hitch. HM the King has been moved from the intensive care unit and is now recovering in a private room.

The date for the general elections has been approved in a Royal Decree for October 15, said Cabinet Secretary-General Rongphon Jareonphan on Friday. The decree is effective from August 24 with the election to be held 60 days later, according to the constitution.
