There are 131 suspected bird flu cases under surveillance and waiting for lab test results in Thailand, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday. Of these, the highest number is 37 cases in the northern province of Phichit, followed by 35 and 16 cases in neighbouring Sukhothai and Phitsanulok Provinces and 12 cases in the central province of Suphanburi.

Eight elephants today boarded an aeroplane in Thailand bound for after weeks of delays caused by animal rights protestors. Following a long legal battle between the Australian government and animal welfare groups, protestors had blocked the animals' transportation to the Thai airport.

The H5N1 bird flu virus has been found in Nakohn Panom, 740 km northeast of Bangkok. 310,000 hens will have to be culled after the virus killed a teenager elsewhere in the country last week, the Agriculture Ministry said on Sunday.

The first paying passengers have landed at Bangkok's new international airport on test flights ahead of its planned opening in September. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was among the 375 passengers on the first flight to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport. "Minor problems should not be an obstacle to opening the new airport... A swift opening is key for Thailand to emerge as a regional aviation hub. We can't wait any longer," he was quoted as saying. However, industry groups expressed concern that the government has rushed to open the airport too quickly.
