The two-year battle to send 54 illegally-smuggled orangutans home is finally drawing to a close as Thai, Indonesian and Malaysian officials meet on Friday and Saturday in Bangkok to finalise the fate of the apes. The orangutans have been detained at Khao Pratap Chang Wildlife Reserve since they were discovered at the Safari World Zoo on the outskirts of Bangkok in 2004, where they were made to fight in kick-boxing contests daily.

The Songkran road death toll has already seen 30 fatalities despite the fact that Thai New Year celebrations do not officially start until April 13. Chief of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department Anucha Mokkawet revealed at least 286 accidents have been reported since midnight Friday. Thirty people have died and 314 have been injured on roads.

Drenchings and drunkenness are two words that come to mind at this time of year. The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) is predicting alcohol sales to rise by eight percent during the Songkran break. The projection is conservative considering last year’s 12.6 percent growth in booze sales as political and economic factors have been taken into account.

Bollywood actor, Salman Khan, has been convicted to five years in prison on hunting charges. On Septempber 28, 1998 the Indian mega-star allegedly poached a chinkara, a protected species of gazelle. The high-profile celebrity looked shaken when he was escorted out of court to spend the night in Jodhpur Central jail. Khan must also pay a 25,000-rupee fine under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Defunct Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says he intends to see the world after stepping down from the premiership. “I will travel all over the world, now I am jobless,'” Thaksin told a local newspaper. The 56-year-old billionaire caretaker PM said he will travel to England this month and will head to Germany in June for the World Cup.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra resigned live on television yesterday, keeping a promise made before Sunday's election that he would resign if his party wins less than 50 percent of votes. "I'm retreating and not accepting the post of prime minister... We have no time to quarrel... I want to see Thai people unite and forget what has happened," said Thaksin before turning teary-eyed to be consoled by his family.

A quarterly Thai political magazine has been ordered to stop distribution of their Oct-Dec 2005 issue after receiving a notice from the Interior Ministry, the Bangkok Post reported. Publisher and editor of Fah Diew Kan (Under the Same Sky), Thanapol Eawsakul, received a directive signed by national police chief Pol Gen Kowit Wattana on Thursday banning him from disseminating the magazine and stating police will seize existing copies.

A United Nations report has condemned Thailand for its lack of female representation in government positions. The report, Women's Right to a Political Voice in Thailand, revealed that women only occupied 10 percent of seats in parliament, one out of 36 Cabinet ministerial posts and one out of 76 provincial governor positions.
