Animal activists blocked a convey transporting eight Thai elephants en route to Australia this week. About 100 animal rights activists, mostly women and children, lay on the road in front of the eight trucks delivering the elephants to Bangkok's Don Muang Airport to catch a charter flight to Sydney that was scheduled to leave Monday.

Australia's Melbourne Zoo and Taronga Zoo in Sydney are importing the pachyderms in exchange for koalas, kangaroos and other native Australian marsupials to be sent to Thailand.

Soi dogs don't get too comfortable because the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) has been charged with the unenviable task of removing stray dogs from the city's streets in preparation for the 60th anniversary of KingKing Bhumibol Adulyadej's coronation.

The BMA's Public Health Division deputy chief, Prasarn Bamrungphan said Bangkok must show its best face to royalty and heads of state visiting from 25 countries for celebrations to mark HM the King's ascension to the throne. Prasarn stated 100 strays had been seized so far.

Nicolas Cage is to star in a Hollywood remake of the 1999 gangster thriller 'Bangkok Dangerous', it was reported on Sunday.

A poll of autograph-hunters found the star of 'Raising Arizona', ''Wild at Heart' and - ahem - 'Con Air' is most likely to be spotted at Bed Supperclub's Models' Night when not on set.
 
Thaksin proposes disaster warning system

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has ordered a feasibility study on installation of a natural disaster early warning system for Northern Thailand, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop said on Friday.

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinatwatra says he will return to politics to deal with escalating southern Muslim insurgency.

Thaksin stepped down after swelling protests demanded his resignation and when the opposition's boycot of the April 2 snap elections created a political vacuum in the country.
