King to undergo surgery on Thursday

On Thursday, Thailand's 78-year-old His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej will have spinal surgery that will take "a long time" to recover from, the palace said.
A statement issued by the palace Monday said that the need for surgery stemmed from a problem detected three years ago in the king's spinal canal.

Thaksin is Thailand's fourth richest man

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been named the country's fourth richest man with a fortune of 85 billion baht, according to Forbes magazine.

Thaksin is the founder of Shin Corp., which owns stakes in top mobile phone company AIS, Shin Satellite, Air Asia and ITV.
 
Man fined for smuggling eggs in underpants

An Australian man caught with six eggs from endangered species in his underwear as he was preparing to fly to Bangkok was fined $20,000 on Monday.

Wayne Floyd said he intended "to surprise his girlfriend" with the eggs as a gift, but Judge Martin Sides ruled that Floyd had intended to sell the eggs overseas, it was reported.
 
Thaksin's 'hidden agenda of violence'

Media mogul Sondhi Lim-thongkul has accused Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of planning a violent conspiracy.

During his Thailand This Week talk show in Lumpini Park, Sondhi spoke of an alleged secret plan to propel the current political conflict to a violent breaking point.
 
Soldiers belong to King, not government'

Privy Council chairman Gen Prem Tinsulanonda this week likened the government to a jockey and soldiers to horses, saying that jockeys come and go, but the owner of the horses stays the same.

In a special lecture to around 950 cadets, Gen. Prem said the soldiers belonged to His Majesty the King and not to a government.

Avian flu surveillance has been increased in 7 provinces, a senior government official said on Saturday.

"July is a risky month. Over the past two years the outbreak started this month," Yukol Limlaemthong, head of the Livestock Department, was quoted as saying.

Scores of elephants are injured each year on Bangkok's roads. The City authority is seeking to crack down on the hundreds of elephants and their panhandling mahouts.
 
1,600 caught in World Cup gambling sting

Thailand's police recovered almost US$200,000 and arrested nearly 1,600 people in a crack down on illegal gambling during the World Cup, it has emerged.

Police deployed hundreds of special units to raid pubs, bars and entertainment spots.
