The Thai government is insistent that the country's largest international airport, the all-new Suvarnabhumi Airport, will open as scheduled on September 28, 2006. Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin met with government agencies overseeing the construction of the new airport for a progress report, said Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee. Deputy Transport Ministers Gen. Chainant Charoensiri and Phumtham Wechayachai also met with the board of directors of Thai Airways International Plc and all authorities confirmed the opening date of the new aviation hub as September 28. Plagued with a host of problems from the beginning of construction, including the CTX bomb detector scandal and reports of cracks on the runway, many skeptics have also doubted whether the airport will be open for operation on time. But the Transport Department Minister remains firm that construction on Suvarnabhumi is almost 100 per cent complete. After the opening, the new airport will be able to handle up to 50 million passengers a year on its first two runways. Suvarnabhumi airport, located 25 kms east of Bangkok, is expected to boost Thailand's economy by the end of the year, hoping to rival Malaysia and Singapore as an aviation hub in the region.
