Drenchings and drunkenness are two words that come to mind at this time of year. The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) is predicting alcohol sales to rise by eight percent during the Songkran break.
The projection is conservative considering last year’s 12.6 percent growth in booze sales as political and economic factors have been taken into account.
The KRC expects the 920,000 foreign tourists visiting the country during the week-long Thai New Year celebrations will buy 1.1 billion baht worth of grog.
April is the booziest month in the year with 7.5 percent more alcohol sold than in other months in 2004, according to figures from the Bank of Thailand. Last year, 6.2 million more litres of alcohol were sold in April. We blame the heat.
