A United Nations report has condemned Thailand for its lack of female representation in government positions.
The report, Women's Right to a Political Voice in Thailand, revealed that women only occupied 10 percent of seats in parliament, one out of 36 Cabinet ministerial posts and one out of 76 provincial governor positions. The figures rank Thailand 113th out of 185 countries, while the worldwide average for female representation is 15 to 16 percent.
The UNDP's Thailand representative Joana Merlin-Scholtes said, "Closing the gender gap in politics needs to be a top priority in all countries, not just Thailand."
The report suggested the country needs to change attitudes, especially among men, to address the imbalance.
