Soi dogs don't get too comfortable because the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) has been charged with the unenviable task of removing stray dogs from the city's streets in preparation for the 60th anniversary of KingKing Bhumibol Adulyadej's coronation.
The BMA's Public Health Division deputy chief, Prasarn Bamrungphan said Bangkok must show its best face to royalty and heads of state visiting from 25 countries for celebrations to mark HM the King's ascension to the throne. Prasarn stated 100 strays had been seized so far.
The dogs will be taken to a new kennel in Uthaithani, 190 kilometers north of Bangkok after they are sterilized and made disease-free. The facility can house up to 10,000 dogs.
The soi dog round-up will specifically target areas near five-star hotels where visiting dignataries will be staying.
The world's longest-reigning monarch, King Bhumibol is an avid dog-lover, and has publicly appealed the case of adopting strays. He has also advocated using native Thai dogs to use in rescue teams in search of disaster victims.
The celebrations for the king will take place on June 12 with a rare procession of Royal Barges on the Chao Phraya followed by a state dinner for distinguished guests the next day.
