In a city with an estimated 823,000 dogs, owners must register their hound with the Bangkok authorities or risk a fine of THB 5,000 and the loss of their pet. "It will keep owners from abandoning their dogs on the street," said Bangkok's deputy governor Wallop Suwandee of the new anti-stray scheme. With the introduction of registration, all pet dogs will be implanted with microchips that will identify their owner. If any dog subsequently causes a problem, the owner will be traced by authorities. From July 4 next year, any dog found unregistered in Bangkok will be sent to a dog kennel in Uthai Thani and its owner will be fined up to THB 5,000.
