Bangkok flooding will happen slowly

Saturday, 29 September 2007
Bangkok's Irrigation Department admits the possibility that the capital could be struck by severe floods in the future but that residents should not worry about that problem now.

Responding to a statement made at the United Nations that Bangkok could face floods in the next 10-15 years, Deputy Director-General of the Irrigation Department Peerapong Suwanmontree said: “the gradual shifting of land means that if floods were to leave Bangkok permanently submerged, it will happen slowly.”

“Whether or not we need to build more dams along both sides of the Chao Phrya river remains to be seen. If sinking holes start to appear, then we may need to start protecting the capital in the long run.”
