Thailand's police recovered almost US$200,000 and arrested nearly 1,600 people in a crack down on illegal gambling during the World Cup, it has emerged. Police deployed hundreds of special units to raid pubs, bars and entertainment spots. From June 1 to July 11, a total of 1,593 people - 492 bookmakers and 1,101 gamblers - were arrested for involvement in some Bt 845 million of illegal bets, Royal Thai Police spokesman Lt-Gen. Achirawit Suphanphesat said. However, he said, only Bt 7,549,000 (about US$200,000) in cash was actually recovered. We wonder where the rest could have gone...?
