Bangkokrecorder interviews DJ Mitomi Tokoto, founder of www.cyberjapan.tv and also well known for being a former model, producer, and trendy DJ.

How old are you?
31 years old! Born the 16 December 1973.

Mitomi TokotoWhen did you first start playing music?
I started in 1989 as a - get ready for this - ROCK DJ! Yes I was playing Guns & Roses, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen and Nirvana. Then in 1991 I discovered House Music and have been hooked ever since.

Have you ever played in Bangkok before?
Never but I heard from Ian Carey (Soul Providers/defected) that the crowd is great and that people love House music so I am really happy to come.

Do you know about the 1 O’clock closing times?
Yes and its very sad cause this is usually the starting of the peak time in a party and most of all in my set.

What do you think about that bullshit?
Well I can’t really comment on the situation because I am not living in Bangkok and don’t know all the facts behind the decision. However as a DJ, those aren’t the best conditions to play in; as I have to play earlier and always watch the clock.

When did you move to Japan?
I moved to Japan 10 years ago as I was looking for my other half of culture that I didn’t know anything about. (I am half French and half Japanese). I guess it was a cultural move.

Mitomi TokotoHow would you describe the clubbing scene in Japan?
It’s great for the choice of parties and DJs. In Japan you have everything: Disco, Techno, Goa, House, Trance, S.M Fetish parties and even more stuff that I can’t mention here cause it will be censored anyway (laughs!). However we do have a problem with the clubbing crowd in Tokyo; for example there is a lot to do at night besides nightclubbing. We have karaoke, Amusement parks, Theme restaurants, Izakaya and so on; so the crowd itself is not as big as someone would think. For example Cyberjapan’s 10th anniversary party which had 2.500 people in Ageha was considered a huge success. I would say that a big successful party here gets around 1000 to 3000 people; and that’s very few compared to Europe.

What is the current fashion trend in Japan for girls and boys?
Well, look at the Cyberjapan Fashion Police! It’s all there!!!

When was the last time you can’t remember how you got home at night?
Never happened cause I don’t take drugs and if I am drunk, I never push too far. I am always able to make my way back home!

What music did you listen to as a kid?
Rock! Rock and Rock with some Grace Jones and funk, but it was mainly all rock and hard rock.

How long did it take to develop the website Cyberjapan?
10 years! When I started Cyberjapan, there was only one other site in Japan. No yahoo Japan. But 10 years after, Cyberjapan is still the same with just me and my assistant; but powered by Pioneer which helps us out with a lot of our parties.

How did the Cyberjapan website help your DJ career?
If Cyberjapan wasn’t there, then I wouldn’t be there also; as a DJ anyway. I know that some people don’t know my name at all but call me Cyberjapan. I guess it’s the Cyberjapan brand that people like and which make our parties so successful. This situation is in fact the same as one of the UK most famous labels. People go for the label image and not really for the line-up.

Whose idea was it to have the fashion police?
Me, to spice up Cyberjapan. Back in 1995, no one was taking party pictures for the net, so I decided to start by taking photos of my girl friends. Why girls, well everyone knows that girls make more views than guys. Right?

What is your favorite clothing brand?
I would say D&G and Kulte. But I am not really into one brand only.

At what age did you first get laid?
12 years old. Probably too young cause I didn’t enjoy it. The girl was 22 years and -not joking- her name was Emmanuelle.

Where did it happen?
Simply in my house in France.

Have you ever had sex over the internet?
No never but I am always open to new experiences. (laughs!)

You are a model, what do you think about the typical model stereotype?
I stopped doing modeling 4 years ago but guess what my favorite movie is. Zoolander and you know why, because the film is really 99% true! We do what our boss tells us to do and that’s it! (laughs!)

How many models have you slept with?
I would say 5 only cause I am not into models. Girls aren’t sports cars so I do choose very carefully with who I am going to get laid. (Except the first time of. (laughs!)

What kind of car do you drive?
I don’t drive. In fact I have a bike but most of the time I grab a Taxi!

Where do you see yourself as an old man?
A charming Dandy who is loved by millions of women! Hugh Heffner is my idol!

Have you ever been arrested?
Yes, 2 times.

What for?
The first time was because I didn’t wear a helmet while riding my bike and the second was in Kuala Lumpur where I was caught at an illegal after hours party as a customer. Nothing really serious I admit.
