Bangkok's party scene wouldnt be the same without Dude Sweet. We visited their head office at Lullabar to talk about music, partying, hip-hop and hairy butt-cracks… “Dude, where’s my party?” That’s what one group of friends, fed up with generic dance music and commercial hip-hop, asked each other a couple years ago. The answer was Dude/Sweet a cult rock party that’s been roving from bar to bar since summer 2002. The Dude/Sweet formula’s simple: hire a club out for the night (preferably one that’s a bit on the dingy side and not too large), and crank out a time machine of rock hits from the ’70s to last week – by ‘hits’, we don’t mean Top-40 shite, but those never fail tracks that get you grooving in the most outlandish ways imaginable. There’s a particular affinity for Brit-pop and American garage revival, so think The Cure, Weezer, The Strokes, Depeche Mode, Happy Mondays, Blur, White Stripes, Manic Street Preachers, The Killers and you’ve got an idea of the playlist… The D/S collective number about a dozen, but Pongsuang ‘Note’ Kunprasop and Chanut ‘Nut’ Wangboonkerd [pictured] are its CEOs. What 3 words best describe Dude/Sweet Note: Let’s Get Drunk! What’s the most messed up/brilliant/disgusting thing that’s ever happened at a D/S party? Note: This guy jumped up on the table at About Café and showed his ass. We took a lot of pictures and later saw what a hairy ass he had. If you could choose 5 band/performers from any time & have them play a D/S, who would they be? Note: The Kills, The Flaming Lips, The Futurheads, Suede & REM So, is D/S an ‘indie’ party? Note: We used the word ‘indie’ when we started about 2-and-a-half years ago. At the time, the word wasn’t well known and people asked, “are you going to play Indian music?” But now, the word’s been taking so many various meanings and silhouettes that people might get confused about whether we mean The Strokes, The Libertines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, etc, or ‘indie’ in Fat Radio’s dictionary. So, instead of using the word ‘indie,’ we use the names of the bands we play.” How was D/S changed the party scene? Note: Does Bangkok really have a scene? Any plans for a super D/S? Note: Keep it small. Making it bigger means work and headaches dealing with people and money. We’re too lazy for that. Do you like ANY Hip-hop? Note: No! Yo! Man, they’re annoying.
