It has been a tough year on the clubbing scene in Bangkok, but Q Bar seems to be marching to a different drum. They deserve high praise for bringing the legendary DJ Premier for a second spin in Bangkok. It was absolutely wicked, and I still have a sore throat after 3 days. But for all you unlucky folks who didn’t make it, these words will do little justice to the energy in Q Bar while DJ Premier was in charge.
It was a night dubbed as ‘real’ Hip Hop and Q Bar Resident DJ Octo held his ground from 11pm for almost 2 hours, with an appetizing set to usher in the main course. But all hell broke loose when the headliner spoke his first words. After hyping the crowd up with a sermon on what is ‘real’ Hip Hop, the music immediately backed up his words. With a cocktail of classics and his signature sound we got the picture. Breaking it down occasionally only to kick it up another notch with a relentless onslaught of feel-good grooves, to reminding us what real Hip Hop is all about, he had us in the palm of his hand. After hitting flavors from the early nineties, retro breaks got their turn. At the same time, Primo was working the crowd like the good old days. Then with a logical progression, the man started firing off those funky beats which brought it back to the old school, followed by a nitrous push to the end that got everyone’s heads hitting the ceiling.
Looking back now it is easy to see how special the night was, witnessing a legend at his best. He did his part to maintain the integrity of Hip Hop, which is a rare sight these days. But just as impressive, were the people who made it out to Q Bar. They kept the vibe all night, giving the legendary DJ Premier the chance to deliver on his promise. This has been one of the better events in Bangkok this year and I’m already looking forward to his next visit. For more info on DJ Premier visit http://www.myspace.com/djpremier
