Culture ONE Review

Let's start from the beginning. The idea of outdoor festivals in SE Asia is not new. ZoukOut in Singapore shows us every year how it's done very well and the Global Gathering showed us how not to do it. But apart of those two there are no equal events around. So Club Culture picked up the idea last year to have one in Bangkok. And the idea was born.

There were 4 stages: the Culture ONE Main Stage (David Morales, Stanton Warriors, Andrew Chow, Spydamonkee, Soundelement and Duke'o'Phive), the Amnesia Stage (Marco V, Brian Cross, Toni Varga, Galacticsoul, Tay and Oum), the Godskitchen Arena (John OO Fleming, AJ Gibson, Sabaii Sabaii, Bank JJ and Electrobacillus as VJ) and the Dudesweet Arena (The Filthy Dukes, Twilight Actiongirl, Slur, Cyndi Seui, Dome Pakorn Lum and Dudesweet). Between all stages there was enough space not to interfere musically. The spaces were filled with bars, a food court, a massage area and an arts and games area.

The music was all together on a very high standard and there was something for everyone. An in-depth on the different DJ's will follow.

As Bacardi was the sponsor for the event all drinks available (apart from water) had the Bermuda Rum in them in many variations. This may have questioned some, but I think it's understandable.

Everything was done with much care of the details and well organized but as we all know if the atmosphere is not right, the whole thing is not as much fun as it could be. The atmosphere at Culture ONE was just amazing! People dancing everywhere and enjoying themselves. It was a huge success and we're looking forward to the next ONE!! Wishful thinking would give us an event like this every month but we hope that we don't have to wait a full year to the next one...

Our photographer Paul made a huge amount of really good pictures of the event. Selecting only the best pictures we uploaded a whopping 237 pictures to our gallery. Please click HERE

Culture one was awesome, a few teething problems but that's to be expected for a first go at it.

A couple of pointers, the bar next to the Amnesia stage was a nightmare and should've been opposite the Amnesia stage where either the V.I.P area or smoking section was as it clashed with the entry to the area, as well as being cramped. Morales thanking the corporate sponsors and crying, 'do you love me Bangkok' ? Kind of a sucky ending. Also the turntablist on the main stage should've probably been at one of the smaller arenas. I really liked him, but that space should've been for banging beats. Who was that guy anyway and where does he play in BKK? He was quality.

These are minor points though and I hope it becomes a regular gig.

Good work Club Culture.........

Why did the good music stop at 12:30am ???
written by Jaidee, January 24, 2008

It was a good TRY...but, one thing absolutely killed me. I was having the best time in Godskitchen Area with John OO Flemming...and then wham! The music stopped at 12:30am....And right there next to the stage, the schedule promised us it would go until 2am. What happened??? Every stage shut down and we were forced to go see David Morales cry on the main stage. It was a shocking end and i held my head down and sadly went home. I don't think the organizers understand the word "CHOICE". Just when the music was getting good, the party unexpectedly was taken away from the people...please try again Culture One.

loved it. was not sure if it will work out but surely i hoped for it. in the end all worries proved to be wrong. Lots of people, good crowd, good atmosphere, reasonable drink prices and you could reach al of the stages easily by walking a maximum of 5 minutes or so from one end to the other. seeing forward to the next culture one.

happy - but not overwhelmed

agree to the fact that the event has been well organized and all details were well thought through. atmosphere was great and the crowd was happy. cruising all stage areas, i have been blown away by all performances, even the very early ones.
but there was one exception: david morales, introduced as the big name and headliner of the event did not rise to the occasion. a bad start (technical problems screwed up the intro), poor music selection, hardly any dj-ing work. and then there was the bit that killed me: for no reason, the massively tattoo-ed buff dj started to cry. for what reason - nobody knows. it was pathetic.
of course he had to give credits to those who made this event possible, but not three times. people wanted to dance and get blown away by the music, but we did not deliver. he promised to be back - not sure if i´m looking forward to this.
i´d rather see the great filthy dukes again - next time on main stage, please.
