Bangkok’s street stalls kick ass. The only problem is deciding which one to patronize. Every month Bangkokrecorder will traipse around town to find the most stand-out street food in the city… In most places around the world, eating on the street is often associated with cheap ingredients and unsanitary cooking conditions. However, eating at one of Thailand’s street stalls could be considered safer and more hygenic than dining at restaurants. After all, can you watch your chef prepare the food before your eyes in a restaurant? Last issue, we unearthed Mr Muu Ping, who makes the leanest pork sticks in town. Another regional favorite street food that uses chicken is khao man gai, or chicken on rice. Ask any Thai person and they will tell you the best kah man gai venue in town is Kai Ton Pratunam on the corner of Petchburi soi 10. Kai Ton Pratunam has served the dish for 19 years, which should stand as testament to its quality and popularity. It’s easy to see why the establishment has operated for so long with its tender chicken and tasty accompaniments of chicken soup and a spicy sauce that’s deliciously piqued with lots of ginger. And the price: an easy 32 baht a dish. Although Kai Ton Pratunam is located inside a store front and offers tables for its patrons, it is considered street food because the dishes are prepared from a portable stand. And don’t worry, the place is still quite ghetto with its harsh fluorescent lighting and cheap plastic furniture. The proprietor was reluctant to give out exact revenue figures, but with at least ten ladies in pink working the floor and manning the “kitchen,” coupled with the outlet’s longevity, we can only assume that this little operation isn’t doing badly at all.
