The word "spa: literally means solus per aqua or health by water. It is taken from the town of Spa in Belgium, which was one of the first places to recognize the healing properties of mineral rich water. Many early health care systems also viewed water as the basis of wellbeing. The Egyptians believed in waters sacred properties, in traditional Chinese medicine water is essential to restoring harmony and is the carrier of qi (life energy) and similarly in Indian Ayurveda water is the medium by which prana (life force) travels within the human body.
