For those sick of treading on the treadmill, rest assured, there are opportunities in the Thai job market is fairly weak for a farang, but spots are available also. Whatever you do, do not expect to get even close to what you’d make working back home. Basically there are three choices: Commission-based work in Bangkok is one of the best options available. The pay is great plus there’s the opportunity to travel. The work can keep you in Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand for a few years, which for many, is enough. The good income and low cost of living in Thailand will ensure you live the high life. However, like many, this country sucks you in and you may become a lifer. Acquire a local job, where in most cases means teaching English for language schools ie. Siam Computer and Language and ECC that arepopular in Thailand. The ones with proper teaching experience include institutions like the British Council and Berlitz. At least in these places you won’t be stuck in non-air-conditioned classrooms with 50 screaming children. Expect to make around 30,000 THB/month working at language schools and much more if you are an actual teacher with appropriate qualifications and experience. In steamy hot educational environments and high schools, you will need a proper mind set for this work. You should at least care about the kids learning instead of simply using your work to remain in Thailand. These kids want to learn, you just need to find a way to teach them in a fun way. Literature and grammar schools will expect much more from you than a local high school where you will mostly play games and the like. Colleges and good language schools all expect you to have a degree and work experience. Don’t think you’ll get off easy in these institutions. The pay in these places ranges anywhere from 40,000 THB/month to over 100,000 THB/month, but the work load is considerably higher compared to the average teacher who clocks in about 20 hours a week. This option can also encompass people with special skills such as DJs and prospective Derek Zoolanders. If you have a good ear for music and you know how to rock the house, there are plenty of clubs looking for fresh breezes from different parts of the world. Do not expect to get paid handsomely at first. It takes time to build a rap if you’re not already seasoned in spinning. But there’s always a chance that you can catch your big one and ride it all the way to the biggest clubs in Bangkok. As for models , there is also pleanty of work to be done for male and female models who look better than the average. Try smaller agencies that might give you a break and get you set up in the modelling world of Bangkok. It’s not all glamour, however. Castings in obscure, hard-to-reach locations and many jobs with crap pay are not uncommon. Also, the actual work will most likely be highly tedious. But sometimes the killer jobs come through where you can travel to beaches and get paid a fair amount for a few days work. Same goes with DJ’s. If you’ve already established yourself somewhere, it’ll be easier for you to jump straight in and make it big, at least according to Bangkok’s standards. Easy living and a very social atmosphere. Criminal Behavior This one is for the hard core fuck-ups who seem to flock to Thailand and Bangkok especially. You’ve already lost all hope of ever becoming a normal person, leading a prosperous life and a future in a hole like Bang Khwang doesn’t really give you the chills. There’s always drugs to be dealt, bars to be opened, bribes to be paid, recreationals to be smuggled into Thailand, prostitution to be arranged and so on and so forth. This job is not recommended for anyone as you might ride home in a body bag, or end up in a studio in Lard Yao or Bang Khwang instead of the sky rises of Sukhumvit. The saddest ones are the farangs who turn “professional” and try to make such a depraved living. by Loyal Dog
