Friday, 12 October 2007
Burma has been named as the world's second largest opium producer in the world, increasing 29 per cent in a year, according to a new United Nations report.

Cultivation of opium poppies in Burma increased from 21,500 hectares in 2006 to 27,700 hectares this year, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In 1999, the Burmese government announced a plan to eradicate opium cultivation within 15 years.
