Fresh Festival LogoThe FRESH festival sounds different and interesting enough to be featured here. Everybody hears about the Bangkok Film Festival but actually there is a bunch of smaller but nevertheless interesting movie events throughout the year. Read below for an overview of FRESH, which is an experimental video and short film event:

It is not the first time that FRESH festival is held in Bangkok. FRESH will bring 22 international and 27 Korean experiemntal videos and short films to Bangkok Code. Now we are not talking about the Code that used to be on RCA a few years back but Bangko Code can be found a 2 minutes walk from the Surasak Skytrain station. All shown videos and films come from the studios of well known or emerging international artists.

FRESH festival is brought to you by the School of Architecture and Design plus the King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi in collaboration with Bangkok Code...

Stephane Pompougnac @ Bed

Stepahne Bed Supperclub

Stephane is a gentleman. You can see this by just looking at him. And he doesn´t only look good on our pictures but also in person. Maybe that has something to do that he is born in Paris.

That´s where he DJ´d since 1997 at the Hôtel Costes and brought out the first CD compilation with the same name in 1999. Hôtel Costes is a pretty famous for the celebrities from all over the world staying there.

The CD compilation consisting of sophisticated lounge house music was an instant hit and so more compilations were released and Stephane gained more international attention.

Last Wednesday Stephane played at Bed for his 10th compilation release.

For a Wednesday and 1.000 Baht entry Bed was pretty full with many friendly faces. At the Bar side Emanuel was giving his best with a dancing crowd. Later Greco, what normally is at the White room, was at the Bar side and Stephane played in the White room. Confusing sentence and also confusing for many, since Stephane was the main act that night and partying at the White room is not as much fun as on the other side.

Of course Stephane´s music is more of a lounging character, but he dropped a couple of very nice electro house tunes which got the crowd going. I think he is an amazing DJ - at the White room side the DJ is very open and reachable for people. Constantly somebody was talking to him, taking pictures, offering him drinks - and he never missed a beat. Props!

I was told that it was Stephane´s 4th visit to Bangkok and if you ask me there surely should be a 5th time!

Glitch Glows with Montonn & Oum
Tuesday, 13 November 2007
Glitch GlowsSome friends at work asked me on Thursday what my recommendation for a night out on Friday was. Without hesitation, I suggested the Glitch night at Glow with DJs Oum and Montonn Jira, two local DJs who are working hard and hot on the circuit here and have been for awhile.  Having been into minimal for a number of years, and after being pleasantly surprised to catch Montonn playing in the backroom at Astra over a year ago, I was well overdue to see him play again. I have seen Oum play a number of times and thoroughly enjoyed his eclectic sets, as well as his ability to rock the house. Zurich was home away from home for a long stretch and the afterhours scene still miss those Zurich nights, when Oum, the friendly host would escort us to a taxi and send us on our way into the morning…

Twisted Republic Pre-Review
Friday, 02 November 2007

Twisted Republic Logo

After last years supernovas of huge events here in Bangkok, where Wednesdays to Saturdays were booked with great parties weeks in advance, it felt like around Christmas someone pulled the plug. Wrought up with long days and short nights for many being home not only for sleeping was a whole new experience. Doing normal stuff like having a quiet one with close friends or getting out of town got en vogue rather than feeding the approaching tinnitus.

And this movement of a new social life kept well into this year. I don´t think I missed many of the great events this year but they just got much fewer than last year. On the new club side we had the gigantic Club Culture Launch Party with Ron Carroll in May where many of last year regulars went to – and then it got a bit more quiet again.

As you may have realized, this time is over. In the last two weeks I´ve been more out than normally in 2 months. Of course this has to do with Halloween and some Anniversary Partys but still there are some great Events coming up! (Have a look at the Events section.)

What is more exciting like new impulses in the scene? “Old is boring” is not true – but of course new things are always much more interesting. And that brings me to new clubs. Especially here in Bangkok, the opening of a new club is a very big happening and comes with a huge pile of expectations.
Later this year we´ll have the opening of the “808 Club” in RCA and yesterday was the pre-opening of “Twisted Republic” in Sukhumvit Soi 11 with the official opening tonight.

So... how is it?!?! Does it meet the expectations? Could it be one of the “cool” spots which people accept?

ZoukOut 2007
Sunday, 28 October 2007
Zoukout 2007ZoukOut is a party. A big party. I would say a big beach party outside event with over 15.000 people that rocks 12 hours through the night once a year on Sentosa Island/Singapore.

But ZoukOut 2007 is much more. It´s a part of lifestyle – and a yearly must! Like for announcements of new Apple gear I´m waiting until finally the date and the line-up are announced on their homepage.

Twisted Republic Bangkok Opening on Sukhumvit 11
Friday, 26 October 2007

Twisted Republic

The creators of Twisted Republic call it "The Ultimate Interactive Clubbin Experience". Driving down Sukhumvit Soi 11 you might already have noticed one building under construction between Bed Supperclub and Sukhumvit Main Road. Twisted Republic will be another major addition the soi 11 next to Bed and QBar making this soi even more one of the main clubbing areas of Bangkok.

The creators, who already have vast experience in the nightlife business, put great emphasis on good music, provided by some of Bangkok's finest DJ's. Electronic music will just as well be featured as Hip Hop so there is something for everybody.

808 Bangkok Opening in December
Tuesday, 23 October 2007
808 Club BangkokGood news: Bangkok gets a new mega club in December called 808! And it is one of the most interesting looking projects of this year. There have been a lot of rumors in the past month about a new club opening at the same location that Club Astra used to be at on Block C, RCA. On our forum you could read several different versions and plans but now it is finally official and Club 808 Bangkok will open in December.

It will open with a world class line-up and considering the need for party that Bangkok people normally feel in the month of December, the opening time couldn't have been chosen more wisely.

Club 808 will boast an "absolutely incredible sound & lighting system" so we are seeing forward to confirm that claim in December this year. The sound system will be completely new, too, putting emphasis on massive subs and crystal clear sound.

Why the…do security guards in Bangkok love whistle-blowing?
Friday, 22 June 2007
Police WhistleNo, this is not an entry about corruption exposures, but rather one of the most sonically evocative constants of Bangkok life: the immutable bleating of security guards' whistles while directing traffic to and from buildings and navigating parking lots.

Some find the pervasive whistle a necessary evil: "It's annoying for me, but I think it's useful for people who are driving so that they can concentrate on something else while listening for the signal to move forward," reasoned a Thai pedestrian.
