Some friends at work asked me on Thursday what my recommendation for a night out on Friday was. Without hesitation, I suggested the Glitch night at Glow with DJs Oum and Montonn Jira, two local DJs who are working hard and hot on the circuit here and have been for awhile. Having been into minimal for a number of years, and after being pleasantly surprised to catch Montonn playing in the backroom at Astra over a year ago, I was well overdue to see him play again. I have seen Oum play a number of times and thoroughly enjoyed his eclectic sets, as well as his ability to rock the house. Zurich was home away from home for a long stretch and the afterhours scene still miss those Zurich nights, when Oum, the friendly host would escort us to a taxi and send us on our way into the morning…
One of my friends had not been to Glow before and asked for the run down. Another friend took the words out of my mouth when he replied that it is a great place to go with a group of friends, very friendly staff and excellent drink servings. My criticisms of Glow in the past have sometimes being echoed on this forum, too many old guys in pinstriped shirts, empty, too clicky etc. But these criticisms were erased after last Friday night. It was packed, there wasn’t a pinstriped shirt in sight and the crowd was one of the best I have witnessed for over a year in Bangkok. An international crowd with an even blend of Farangs and Thais, lots of groups of mixed friends who seemed to know everyone else there, and of course a big percentage of beautiful people, especially girls screaming and dancing for more from the energetic and interactive DJs.
We arrived around midnight after a long disco nap, and the energy was infectious, with whoops and shouts from the crowd as Oum finished off his set. Everyone was dancing. The glow management, including the lovely May, my old dancing partner from Astra, welcomed us into the Glow family. Montonn’s set was stripped back but very sexy to dance too. He built it up nicely and although it was slightly dull in parts towards the end he kept it random and dirty enough to keep the groove on. His energetic style was supported by Oum and his crazy antics.
What was the most pleasing aspect of the night was the fact that Bangkok does have a local scene, and judging by the support on the forum, it has been building up for quite awhile now. To have local DJs and great parties to look forward to every week (check out Threesome this Friday at RCA) is what the city needs. To see the young crowd recognize the tracks and react appropriately, was enough to make the night worthwhile in itself. Keep supporting the local scene Glow.
